Some correspondence is held over,

The annual meeting of ratepayers of the Waikchu Road Board District will be held at Te Karaka at 2 o’clock to-morrow afternoon.

Captain Edwin wired at 11.55 a.m. yesterday: —“Hoavy gale from between north-west and west and south ; glass rise ; tides high ; weather exceptionally cold.”

Out' Coast correspondent telephones that a mob of 200 cattle, in charge of Mr J. Graham, are on the way 'down to the freeeziug works from Mr Cooper's Puatae station. They should arrive to-morrow.

Mr O’Riley, ot the Albion Stables, has been making substantial purchases of .horses at Pakarae. A notification having been made that horses trespassing on Wiiaugava must be taken away, there was a general muster and sale. Mr O’Riley, who is a first-class judge of horseflesh, and has a happy way of dealing- with the natives, bought about 50 really good animals. One mob has already arrived in Gisborne, and the other should arrive this afternoon. Probably those Of obtaining a horse of a good stamp will be able to purchase from Mr O’Riley. The Rev. W. Ready, who is at present in Gisborne, is one of the most entertaining speaker that we have had in this district, and his lecture last evening was much appreciated by all who were previleged to hear him. He could not resist the temptation of having a shot at residents of jisborne in regard to the name of the Bay. ” Why don’t you change your name,” remarked the rev. "entleman ; “ you don’t deserve to be called ‘ Poverty.’ I should say that the < Bay of Goshen ’ is much more desirable for a name. You are all well dressed ; you have good houses, so do not stick to ' Poverty ’ any longer.”

A meeting of those interested in the formation of a variety company, for the purpose of raising funds for local chartties and other deserving local objects, was held last evening, there being twelve or fifteen present, It was decided to call the combination the Tivoli Company. The appointing of a committee was leit to a meeting to be held oil Wednesday next, when it is hoped a strong working, committee will be appointed. Mr J. who has had a deal of experiepce in the -theatrical line, has kindly consented to rgnder all assistance in his power towards making the entertainments attractive. From the talent available a bright little company should be the result of the efforts of those who are interesting themselves, and the thoughtfulness of those in providing funds for the many local wants should certainly meet with support.

The Union Company’s s.s. Te Ann* arrived in Auckland from Gisborne a 11 o clock last evening, after a rough passage.

Ihe safe stolen from the Roseland Hotel was found at the Park Company’s grounds yesterday, with a wheelbarrow near by. The contents of the safe had been taken.

In the ballot at Woouville for sections in the Kumeroa estate. Mr James Lomax, of Gisborne, had section BG, block 13, allotted to him, he being the only applicant for that section. The Gazette notifies that Messrs Frank Harris and William Sievwright have been appointed members of the Assessment Court under the Government Valuation of Land Act Amendment. Messrs W. G. Maelaurin and A\7 Sievwright htivo been appointed for the County of Waiapu, and Messrs J. P, Lomax and Enoch Hallett for the County of 'Waiioa. The fortnightly dance in connection with the Zealandia Quadrille Assembly was held last evening, and was attended by upwards of thirty couples. The iloor was in perfect order, and excellent music was provided by Mrs Fernandez. Mr 11. Pool made a good M.C. Luring the evening a song was contributed by Mr Solomon Kiwi, and a clever step-dance was given by Mr G. Warrick.

Much regret was felt yesterday when the sad information was given of the death of Mr E. S. Hooper, who had been in the district for 80 years, having arrived when he was seveu years old. Ho had been in failing health for some time. Much sympathy is felt for the widow and family. The funeral will leave the late residence of deceased at 2 this afternoon.
