On account of our East Coast edition, a number of local reports are ! beld over until to-morrow. O’Reillev’s brake will leave the Masonic Hotel corner for the Ormond (lance at half-past six this evening. Captain Edwin wired at 12.57 pan. .yesterday: “Heavy gale from between N.W. and W. and S. ; glass rise ; weather colder ; ordinary tides.” The shooting match between the Gisborne Bowling Ciub and the East Ccast Mounted Rifles, which was fixed for last Thursday, eventuates this afternoon, the break leaving town at one o’clock sharp. The team to represent Huia juntas against West End on Saturday will be picked from the following:—Law, Shaw, Thomson, Driller (2), Murphy, Scott,(2), Gibson (2), McCullough, Tapu, Taylor, Dodds, Bell, Lawler, Bowen, Anderson, Osborne, Sharp (2), Vowles. The Rev. W. Ready was a passenger by the s.s. Zealandia yesterday. His famous lecture, “ From London Streets to the Pulpit, or the Story of My Life,” to bq given in Wesley Church this evening, at 8 o clock, should draw a crowded house.

From the report of last night’s meeting of the Rugby Union, it will be seen that in order to cope with the “ small boy ” question the Union has decided to issue boys' tickets tor the modest sum of 2s. Tickets may be obtained from any member of the Union, Mr Miller, or the Hon. Sec., Mr W. McCredie.

Over twenty ladies presented themselves at the opening lecture on First Aid last evening. Ladies who intend going up for the examination are reminded that they must attend four lectures out of the five. The next lecture will be delivered by Dr Welby Fisher on Monday, at halfpast seven, when the hon. secretary will again attend to issue tickets. Yesterday morning, Napier reported N.W. wind, cloudy ; New Plymouth, S.W. gale, overcast; Wellingtdn, N.W. breeze, cloudy; Groymouth, N.S.W., passing showers ; Christchurch, N. wind, overcast; Dunedin, calm, overcast; Invercargill, light N.E., blue sky. A moderate to heavy sea was generally experienced on the coasts.

At the Police Court yesterday, before Messrs IJ. Lewis . and G. Stubbs, J.’sP., Edward Currie, was charged with driving, on the 9th inst., a horse with a sore shoulder. Defendant said the animal had been turned out some time, and that the cover on its back got twisted, and the sores originated in that manner. Constable Doyle.gave evidence as to examining the horse, which was harnessed with a breast-plate instead of a collar. He thought the sores were made by the harness. Defendant was fined £2, with costs 7s,

A presentation of a pleasing character took place at the Ormond school yesterday afternoon. Mr Jardine, who is leaving this district on Sunday noxt to become classical master at Wanganui College, was presented by the children of the Ormond school with a gold locket and silver-mounted cigarette holder and case, match-box, and ash-tray. 1 The presentation was made by Miss McClure, who expressed the rogret tho children felt at Mr-Jardine’s departure from tho district. Mr Jardine feelingly responded, thanking the children for their kindness.

The usual weekly meeting of the Poverty Bay Rugby Union was held last evening, Mr Miller presiding. Correspondence was read from the New Zealand Rugby Union re the proposal to send a New Zealand team to England. The matter was left in the hands of the Union’s delegate. The question of admitting boys to the matches was brought up, and it was decided to issue season’s tickets to boys for 2a a ticket-. In accordance with his previous notice of motion, Mr McCredie moved.that the subscription payable by each club to the Union be £3 3a. Mr Miller seconded the motion, which was unanimously carried. The various lists of players were handed in, and classified. Mr A. W. Rees was appointed referee for Saturday’s senior match, and Mr J. Webb for the juniors. The twenty-fifth anniversary of the Borough, and the thirteenth successive installation of Mr John Townley as Mayor, were celebrated yesterday. The public ceremony took place at “the Council Chambers, at noon, and members of the first and present Councils were afterwads entertained at dinner by the Mayor and Mayoress at their residence, Peel street, it is interesting to note that of.the members of the first Council four were present at yesterday’s ceremonies, viz., Messrs John Townley, W. F. Crawford. T. Adams, and W. Adair. The remaining five have passed over to the Great Majority. Mr W, F. Crawford was the first Mayor of Gisborne,. and to him was allotted the honor of proposing the toast of the Mayor and Mayoress. A report of the proceedings will appear in to-morrow’s Times.
