LABOR DISPUTES.
By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, last night. The Arbitration Court to-day began the hearing of the dispute referred to it by the employees-in the grocery trade. Somethink like 170 employers were cited. The demands asked the Court to fix a week’s Work at 49 hours, with 9 p.m. as the limit on Saturdays. The weekly wages claimed ranged from £3 12s 6d for first counter hand to £2 5s for assistants. Classification of hands "was also asked for", shops employing only one assistant to pay at the rate of £2 10s per week. Provision was also proposed for apprenticeship for a term of four years. Carters’ hours were set down at 46i per week. Preference of employment for members of the Union was demanded.
