A SAD ACCIDENT.
FALL OVER A CLIFF. MAN FATALLY INJURED^ (Per Press Association). DUNEDIN, last night. While a cart was being driven to Port Chalmers last night by an elderly man named Fitzgerald, it appears to have fallen over a cliff a distance of sixty l'eet near the railway line below. When the first train was coming to town this morning, Guard Logie, on approaching St. Leonards, saw lying in the water at the foot of the cliff an unusual mass, which proved to consist of a man, cart, and iiorse,
When found, Fitzgerald was oil top of the cart, which was upside down, and his right leg was broken. The horse was still in the shafts, and had an ugiy gash on the shoulder. Fitzgerald was taken on board the train, and conveyed to the hospital. But immediately on reaching the hospital, he succumbed from the injuries sustained and the subsequent exposure

DUNEDIN, last night, loafer.—ln connection with the .Kith of Richard Fitzgerald, it appears from the statement of Alfred Perry, win wgs ivjl]i him, that they had some drink at the Ravensbourne Hotel. At St. Leonard’s Embankment Perry states, the horse suddenly shied and fell over the side of the Embankment. He managed to save himself, but did not go down to see if the old man was hurt. He says he knpe..ed at the doors of some houses, but receiving no reply had walked home to Port Chalmers,
According to the statement of Mrs Smith, deceased’s daughter, Perry knocked at her door, and asked if the old man had got home yet. When a reply in the negative was given, be gave no information about the accident.- ,
