A CORRECTION.

(To the Editor of the Times)

Sir,—l am requested by householders to seek space to correct the erroneous statements made in the Times of Mon- • 'day last by your loquacious Hauiti correspondent, in his report of the Tolago Bay householders’ meeting and the subsequent school committee meeting. He refers to it as an amusing performance revealed to him by a very popular candidate and eye-witness. . After enumerating the candidates and chairman, he says, “Much farcical prelude was exhibited, whereupon Messrs Holder, J.P., and Tullock, to the amazement of the remaining candidates .withdrew.” Mr Tullock is in Australia, and the remarkable J.P.’s withdrawal was the only amusing" Incident of the evening, and described by a Committeeman (holding his sides) as, “Did you see him scoot.” No apoiogy is needed for this slang"word “scoot,” for anybody who saw the performance would marvel how any civilized vocabulary could do without it. He again says, “The wily officer, for reasons unassigned, could not be induced to give his casting vole.” There was no chairman elected, and there could be, no casting vote. Further on he says, "‘Sickened by the approach of midnight the assembled gathering gradu- ■ / ally dwindled homeward.” The meeting was over at twenty minutes past <. nine- With regard to Dial mare’s ness about fishing for a J.P. ship, I thimc results prove how easy it is, providing you keep right with Tim Donovan.— I am, etc., GEORGE KILBURN.
