AUSTRALIANS v. NOTTINGHAM.

Duff and Truiuper opened the Australians innings, the former playing with confidence. Trumpet- played brilliant allround play, but Hallam secured him with an oil-break. One wicket for 75. His score included seven feurers. Hill, who followed, compiled 14, when Goodacre caught hitn easily at third man. Two for 104. Gregory was next, but a few runs later Duff skied one to Wass at mid-on. Three for 116. Duff’s was an excellent, chanceless innings. Darling’s arrival saw Gregory s dismissal through an easy catch by Goodacre in the slips. Four for 125. Darling, with a half dozen to his credit, was missed at the wickets. Noble partnered his captain, but after passing Darling s total gave Shrewsbury an opportunity from an off hard cut at point. Five for 187. After luncheon the partnership of Darling and Armstrong added runs freely. The Victorian was bowled off his pads. Six for 175. Hopkins followed Armstrong, and had a life at 24. added 130. Hopkins was at the wi for ninety minutes. Hail and rain began to fall. Kelly filled the vacancy. Darling w playing doggedly when stumps wer, drawn. Seven wickets down for 343, Darling’s score being ninety-five an.* Kelly’s twenty. To-day the weather was dull, but warmer. The wicket is still excellent. The attendance was meagre. Darling played the first ball on to the stumps without removing the bails. He reached his century for two hours and thirty minutes’ play. He added another twenty-eight, when Hallam oaught him at cover point low down. His innings was characterised with determined driving, though quieter latterly. He was two hours and ninety minutes at the wickets ; he hit thirteen fourers. Eight wickets for 425.
The bowling was moderate. Jones knocked up thirty-eight. Nine wickets for 468.
Kelly was caught easily at the slips. He gave a fine display of leg side work. Howell scored four, and the Australians’ first innings closed for 474. Additional sepres:— Darling, o Hallam, b J. Notts then went in for their second innings. IremoDger and Jones opened. Just before lunch Kelly damaged his finger, Hill taking the wickets while Carter fielded in his place. Jones narrowly escaped being run out at thirteen. A few runs later he was caught by Duff in the slips, low down. Iremonger was driving finely. One wicket for 56. W. Gunn knocked up twenty-three when ho got leg before to Armstrong. Two wickets for 92. Shrewsbury went in next. Iremonger was smartly caught by Armstrong off his own bowling. He gave two chances. Three wickets for 97. J. Gunn succeeded, but Shrewsbury was easily caught at midoff by Noble. Four wickets for 104. Saunders fielded for Jones, who was lamp. Goodacre was caught easily by Howell in the slips. Five wickets for 145. Dixon went in next. John Gunn, who had batted Bteadily, was caught by Darling at square leg. Six wickets for 154. Anthony was bowled off his pad, after adding a single. Seven wickets for 156. Oates, played on for a “ duck.” Eight wickets for 171. Dixon was slogging, but Armstrong beat him. Wass only made four, when Armstrong dismissed him. Hall was not out with eight, the innings thus closiug for 183. The scores were :
