Tho weather is threatening, and the "v~ attendance inoagre. The wicket is slow. ‘ ' Notts won the toss, and elected to bat. liemonger and Jones commenced, but the former hit out at a ball from Noble, which he missed, and lost his wicket. Jones, beforo he lost his partner, scored freely with excellent leg and glide strokes. One wicket for 27. William Gunn followed, but got out leg-before to Isoble s seconi ball. Two for 27. Shrewsbury partnered Jones, who continued to score rapidly till he made a lofty drive to long on, where Hill effected a nice catch. His score comprised seven fourers, and ho made 16 off two overs from Howell. Three for 51. The woather now brightened. -Goodacre had added five, when he injured himself in trying to leg hit Armstrong, and retired. John Gunn took his place, and he and Shrewsbury made matters lively. After lunch, the fielding was smarter, but Hopkins’ bowling was erratic right through the afternoon. The batsmen punched the bowling freely. Trurnble’s absenco was badly felt, as Jones was not in form. The Shrewsbury and Gunn partnership was undissolved till tho second century appeared. Shrewsbury carried his score to 73, when ho was clean bowled in trying a leg stroke off Trumper. He played a faultless innings, occupying 150 minutes, j Hour for 200. The partnership ha’d produced 139, Gunn’s contribution being 69. On resuming after the ton adjournment, Gunn was disposed of in tho first over. He put up a skyer, and Howell nook a catch off his own bowling. Tho departing batsman was 135 minutes at the wickets, and did not give a single chance. His score included ten fours. Five wickots for 214.. Dixon made three. Six wickets for 233. Goodacre, who retired after tho fall of the fifth wicket, carried his score to 20, when ho was bowled by Trumper with a yorker. When 14, he was missed by Darling off Howell. Seven for 249. Anthony fell a victim to one of Jones’s yorkers. He gave a chance to Gregory at cover-point off Trumper when he had made 14. Eight for 270. The ninth wicket fell for 279, and the score was carried to 288 for the last wicket. Stumps wore then drawn. The following are the scores
