A SEVERE SENTENCE.

DUFFY GETS TEN YEARS’ HARD LABOR.

By Telegraph—Press Association

Auckland, last night. Tho trial of John Duffey for aggravated assault on Constable Irvine, on March 29, was concluded at the Supreme Court today. The jury returned a verdict of guilty, but recommended the prisoner to mercy, on the ground that in their opinion the constable exceeded his duty in the first instance.

His Honor commented severely on the prisoner’s offences, and sentenced him to ten years’ hard labor. Duffy had several previous convictions for crime and violence.
