Our Mercantile Marine.

Mr Beazley, Chairman of the Liverpool Steamship Association, states that since 1890 foreigners have purchased two thousand one hundred and ninety-six British steamers, the tonnage aggregating one million eight hundred and thirty six thousand five hundred and nine tons. It is imperative that the Government should increase the subsidies and remove the mass of regulations harassing British shipping, and recognise that the mercantile marine is a cheap training school for the Navy.
It is reported that Mr Morgan is offering an additional four millions for more first-class Liverpool steamers.
Mr Balfour has declined to widen the scope of the Shipping Inquiry so as to embrace all British shipping questions.-
