HELPING THE POOR.
(To the Editor of the Times). Sir, —While we are seeking to celebrate the Coronation, by various forms of rejoicing, let us not forget the sick and the poor. Our King is setting a good example in one direction by providing a dinner for half a million of the poor of London. In this favored district we have, happily, no occasion for this particular form of benevolence ; but I would ask the women of Gisborne, if there is not a great need for a free nurse in many an unfortunate home in our midst. This need is always more acute in winter, but has never yet been met in Gisborne. Often our medical men are called (o a house, where perhaps the mother is being slowly worn to death by hard work, and where the only cure would be for a kind-hearted capable housekeeper to take her place for a week or two, and give the mother a complete rest, or the opportunity for a change in the country. And how often a nurse is needed where the funds for both nurse and necessaries are not forthcoming. Take maternity cases in families suffering from misfortune. If a nurse were provided free of expense —the other necessaries might be within reach. If the women of Gisborne would each subscribe 5s per annum or more, we should be able to retain at one call such a person as we require for the purpose, and pay her a small salary when she was actually engaged at work. The scheme could be worked under the auspices, and with the help of the St. John Ambulance Association, and could be managed by a committee of ladies. All cases of need could be promptly telephoned to the Hon. Secretary, who would immediately consult the ladies, and who would thus be in a position to render help without delay. Could the ladies celebrate the King’s Coronation in a more humane manner ? Surely such a system of methodical mercy towards the weaker sex, should recommend itself to every woman—and the cost would be so easily borne.—I am, etc.,
G. Stubbs, Hon. Sec. St. John Ambulance Association,
