Smuts’ Transvaalers destroyed sections of the railway in the west. They demanded the surrender of Ookiep oil the 1-lth April. Colonel Skelton, who had three weeks’ provisions for six thousand souls, brought in the Misklip and Nababeep garrisons, but the Town Guard of Concordia refused to join. It is reported that they surrendered without resistance-
The garrison at Springfontein made a gallant fight. They surrendered in face of numbers who were ready to dynamite the blockhouses. Elsewhere several in the blockhouses were killed by dynamite thrown on the roof*
