At Matauri Bay, Harry Spanhake was killed by a log passing over him. His mate, Ned Bowyer, was slightly injured. The question whether there will lie any celebration of Coronation Day in Auckland came up at the City Council meeting, as the outcome of a letter' from a firm of fireworks manufacturers, who quoted a price for an aerial display on that occasion. It was resolved that the Mayor should call a meeting of citizens to discuss the best method of celebrating the event.
NAPIER, last night. William Strawford, a cadet employe ed at the Takapau railway and post office, has been committed to the Supreme Court for sentence for the theft of letters.
WAIPAWA, last night. Father O’Shea, parish priest for four years, who is leaving for Taranaki, was entertained at a social last night, and presented with a purse of sovereigns. STRATFORD, last night.
The new municipal theatre was opened last night with a brilliant function.■ •Companies can now rely on good accommodation.
WELLINGTON, last night. At the Supreme Court criminal sittings to-day, J. M. Connolly was sen. tenced to a year’s imprisonment for indecent assault on a young girl. General orders have been issued by the Commandant for re-organising the permanent defence forces of the colony.
DUNEDIN, last night. The takings for the Amy Castle concert exceed £SOO, a record for Dunedin.
INVERCARGILL, last night.
The Borough Council has resolved, on the casting vote of the Mayor, to abolish the ward system.
