FEDERAL POLITICS.
Proposed large increase in •SALARY. By Telegraph—Pres3 Association—Copyright Melbourne, May 1. In tho Federal Houso Mr Barton moved the second reading of the Go-vernor-General’s Establishment Bill, providing for an increase of salary from ten to eighteen thousand from January Ist of last year, and to continue until one year after he takes up his residence in the Federal capital. He said that if the Bill was passed Lord Hopetoun would still be several thousands out of pocket. Ho had spend about ten thousand pounds to ensure that Australia would bo properly represented during the Royal visit. No claim would be made for this if tho Bill was carried in the Senate.
Mr Symons, in a forceful speech, opened the second reading of tho debato on tho Customs Tariff Bill. Ho hoped that tho Senate would never forget that it had control of taxation. It was so contemplated by tho framers of tho Constitution. Mr O’Connor had greatly mistaken the temper of the Senate when ho warned it of the consequences of interfering. If it yielded to that mysterious threat it would establish a precedent that would hang like a millstone to their neck for all time, and drag tho Senate to a position below the moanost Upper Houso in existence.
