A PLUCKY CONSTABLE.
CANftOT SWIM, BUT SAVED A DROWNING MAN. [By Teiegragji' —press Association.] Auckland last night. A plucky rescue from drowning was made last night by Constable Miller, at Devonport, " Frederick Arbern, being short-sighted, accidentally walked over the end of the wharf. Miller heard the eiies, and threw a lifebuoy in the water, but Arbern was drowning, and did not catch the buoy. The constable took off his overcoat and tunic, and having tied the end of a rope to the wharf, slid down it into the water and reached the drowning man. The latter clutched Miller’s legs, and both went under together. The constable slipped the rope round Arbern’s Dou.y , ". rul hauled himself up on to the wharf hand over hanu. vvas muc h exhausted, and pulled Arbern on to the wharf.' Miller cannot sjyirp himself, and if he had'lost hold of the rope there is little doubt that he' would : 'have been drowned.
