TRIMMERS’ STRIKE.

CRANES IDLE. By Telegraph—Press Association— Copyright Sydney, April 29. The whole of the cranes on the Government wharves at Newcastle were practically idle to day. Owing to a trimmers’ strike there was little loading. Where trimming was not required loading was proceeding on some private cranes. An attempt to got the Secretary of the Trimmers’ Union to induce the men to resume work till Monday, pending negotiations for a settlement, failed. A conference of tho Stevedores and Trimmers' Union is being held to-night.' It is believed there is fair hope of arriving at a settlement. Should it fail many collieries will probably be laid idle to-morrow.
