“ I am happiest,” His Majesty once wrote in a confessional album, “ when I can, like plain Mr Jones, ■go to a race meeting without it being chronicled in the papers next day that Ilis I-lighness the Prince of Wales has taken to gambling very seriously, and yesterday lost more than ever , lie can afford to pay !” There is no doubt as to His Majesty’s enjoyment of the national sport. He is an ardent lover of it, relishing it most perhaps when he attends in least state. A July meeting hard by the sliady plantation at Newmarket, with sensible hot weather clothes and head gear to match, no doubt appeal much more strongly to his sense of enjoyment than all the glories of State ceremonial Ascot*
