THE PLAGUE.

Melbourne, April 26. Mr Barton has received a cable from Sir Joseph Ward announcing a case of plague at Auckland.

Auckland, Saturday. The patient Virtue has been confined to the plague hospital, and is doing well. So far the family has been isolated. None of them have developed any symptoms of plague, though it is seven days since Virtue was taken ill. The house was gutted and fumigated, and other precqutions taken.

Christchurch, Saturday. Dr Symes, Health Officer for Canterbury' district, stated that under present conditions in this district it is highly improbable that plague will obtain a footing, and it is unlikely that it will be introduced iu a similar manner to that said to be responsible for the case in Auckland, as Lyttelton is very rarely the first port of call for Australian steamers. The city and surrounding boroughs have keen employing special inspectors, and a number of insanitary buildings fiave been condemned. There is no, evidence of rats in the district being infected. The City Council have had three inspectors making a special examination of. the qity for tho past two months. anc( it is not yet completed.
