IT he Trades and Labour Council have resolved to request the Acting Premier that the Arbitration and Conciliation Act be amended, giving preference to unionists in all awards. They expressed extreme regret at the failure of the Belgian Socialists to secure universal suffrage and deplored the number of lives lost in trying to secure what New Zealand already possesses. In the Police Court, Arthur Forrester, master of the ship Quirang pleaded guilty to proceeding on a voyage from the Bluff to Auckland without a full crew. He was fined £5 and costs,

It is rumored that the Stratford Hotel has changed hands, the consideration being £13,000. WELLINGTON, last night. The Wellington bakers have decided to raise the price of 21b loaf to 3Ad cash from Ist May In consequence of the opening of the Pacific cable, the following cable rates have been decided upon : To New South Wales, Victoria, South and Western Australia, ordinary messages 4Ad per word, Government messages 3-A-di per word ; to Tasmania, ordinary mcs-i sages 5Ad per word. These rates will apply to messages by the Eastern Extension Company’s cable, except the rate for Government messages.. To Norfolk Island the ordinary rates will be 3d per word, and for Government messages 2d ; to Fiji, ordinary Bd, Government fid. International messages- will be accepted by the Pacific cable, the rates being the same as for the Sydney-Wakapuaka cable. The charge for press messages between Fiji and New Zealand will be 3d per word, and plus 6d per 100 words, or fraction thereof, for transmission over New Zealand land lines. DUNEDIN, last night. It is understood that the Roslyn tramways have been purchased by a 10-t cal syndicate. The price has not been disclosed. Walter Goodwin, who was severely handled when found on the premises of Mr, S .Bladford, High street, and was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence for burglary, received twelve months.
In bankruptcy the order of discharge of Robert Dynes, farmer, of Glenkebich, who had previously been dealt with in the lower Court under the criminal clauses of the Act for failing to deliver up cattle, was suspended for two years. NEW’ PLYMOUTH, last night. The statement of the fund raised for the relief of the widow and children of Nyhane, the driver killed on the railway recently, shows the total receipts were £174 17s fid. The committee decided to consult the Mayor of Petone, where the widow has gone to live, as to the disposal of the fund.
