GIRLS BEAT BOYS FOR CIVIL SERVICE APPOINTMENTS.

Dunedin, last Dight. In reference to the appointment of five girls to one department of the Civil Service in Wellington, Sir J. G. Ward explains that the names of the five girls appeared at the head of the Civil Service examinations list, and they were entitled to appointments when vacancies occurred. Had the names of the boys headed the list, they would have been appointed, but as the young ladies occupied the position, and believing women entitled to fullest consideration in these matters, he gave directions for the appointment of the girls in the ordinary form. The appointments have nothing to do with tbs retirement of Civil servants over 65 years of age,
