RAILWAY COLLISION.

OX OTAGO CENTRAL LINE,

By Telegraph—Press Association. Dunedin, last night. What is believed to be a somewhat serious collision occurred on the Otago Central railway this morning. The down train usually going to Dunedin was running about two hours late owing to a slip at Wedderburu. About 400 yards on the other side of Hind on it came into collision with the 2.50 train from Dunedin. Two engines and several trucks of both trains left the rails, and some of the trucks and carriages were much damaged. One carriage, it is believed, was telescoped. Tiie fireman had his leg broken, and several passengers were injured or 1 knocked about. A relief engine with doctors and ambulance appliances left Duuedin tonight, and may return about 1 a.m. Very fow particulars are available so far. Mr Grant, Traffic Manager, left on a visit of inspection for the North to-day, and is directing operations by wire at Oamaru. So far no details are known here.

FURTHER PARTICULARS. By Telegraph—Press Association. Dunedin, last night. By the Otago Central railway accident none of the passengers are believed to bo severely injured. Fireman Hewitt had his hip injured. Sergt.-Major Cardale, drill insti'uctor, and Mrs J. Reid, of Wedderburu, are slightly cut about the head. Mr Taylor, of Middlemarch, is slightly bruised. Two trucks are overhanging the river, held up by the couplings. Had the collision occurred higher up both trains must have gone into the river 40 or 00 feet below. There were 25 passengers in tho down train, but very few on the up train. One engine was much damaged, also waggons. One car and five waggons were derailed.
