LAND BOARD.

The meoting of the Hawke’s Bay Land Board, held on Saturday morning, was attended by the Commissioner (Mr E. C. Gold-Smith) aud Messrs Matthewson and Groom. The following correspondence waß considered: — From J. Bayliss, applying to close the road between section 155, Patutahi, and Makaahu stream—Referred to Road Board for permission to fence off road. From C. A. DeLautour, asking that

loases over portions of the Whakaangiangi sal and sbl be surrendered, and offered again loaded with improvements under tho Land Act. Mr J. W. Nolan appeared

for tho applicant.—lt was decided to recommend tho matter to the Governor for approval. From H. Kenway, asking that a now lease be issued for S.G.R. 59. —Application granted. From J. O’Grady, asking that the artesian well on section 1, block 11.,

Willows estate, be repaired.—lt was decided to recommend that a new well be made or the old one repaired. From C. Gray, consenting to take 547 acres of the Waimata No. 1a block, on the same terms as his S.G.R. 58.—Accepted. Applications to transfer were received aB follows: L. N. Skeefc to P. A. Dalziell, section 2, block 111., Nuhaka.— Recommended. 11. Beaufoy to J. H. Boaufoy, sections 1 and 5, blocks xrv. and xv., Motu, S.D. — Approved. H. R. Shanks to G. Maxwell, section 7, block vi., Willows estate. —Recommended.

W. W. Shanks to H. Beavis, section 1, block v., Willows estate.—Approved. Messrs Steele and Trafibi’d applied for a rebate in rent. They had taken up run 29 in the Hangaroa district, which proved too large for them to duul with, and they had to divide tho section. They had consulted the Land Office, which had agreed to tho survey line. Tho cost for the dividing of the land had been £SO. They had understood that it was the wish of the Government to out into suitable areas for settlers. The block of land had Jain idle for years, and they could not take it up as it was before. They were doing all the improvements to the best of their ability, and had a pack track of twelve miles to the section. The amount improved was

1200 acres. The Commissioner stated that tho Government could not do so. It was not the wish of the Government that the block had been cut up. Tho liability for the survey was their own, and if they acceded to the request the Board would be deluged with such applications in Hawke’s Bay, where such divisions had been made, and settlors had paid for the division of the land.

Mr Groom said that they had taken up the block as tenants in common, and if they had held the block in common there would have been no such expense. Mr Matthewson said that the division had been made for their personal convenience. aud they would have to bear the expense of it. —Application declined. Mr Morice, of Hangaroa, applied for a rebate upon his section. A tire had run through the land some three years ago, and consequently the land was very difficult to deal with.

The Commissioner stated that they could not consider a rebate, and they could only recommend an extension of time in the paying of his rent. Messrs A. F. Matthews and Whinray, from the Chamber of Commerce, asked that the regulations in reference to the Motu lands, which are covered with a valuable asset of timber, should be relaxed. They requested that a recommendation should be forwarded to the Minister of Land on the subject. The Commissioner asked if they had any idea of the time tho railway would take to reach there, and Mr Whinray replied they were sanguine of it getting there iu two years, and Mr Matthews said 18 months.

Mr Whinray proceeded to say that there was one section of 2000 acres, reported upon by the Government expert, which was valued at £9,600,000, being matai, rirnu, white pine, aud mairi.

The Commissioner stated that he knew the particulars of the district, on which the timber was very scattered. He said it was a very difficult question to deal with. They had forced their tenants to improve their land, and they could scarcely now stop others from doing so. Mr Matthews asked that if any of the tenants applied to the Board to be re-

leased from the regulations, they should be released.

The Board agreed to comply with the suggestion. It was decided to forfeit section 14, lot 6, Willows Estate, and section 15, block 6, Willows Estate ; also, small grazing run 32, and to offer same for further selection bui-dened with improvements. It was decided to open section 3, block 20, Nuhaka North, for selection.

It has come 1 At a Sydney police court, recently, a woman was fined for expectorating on the footpath.—Sydney Bulletin.

If remunerative labor were as plentiful as it ought to bo, wo would not see such an army of co-operatives, who have come to the condition of solely trusting to the State as a sort of foster mother to find work for them, something after tho manner of the Roman populace when they cried out for bread and amusements. Neither would wo see so many of the ablest and boldest of our young men so ready to hie them off to South Africa if they could get good comfortable billets in New Zealand.—Greyinouth Argus.
