EDUCATIONAL MATTERS,

Auckland, last night. In accordaneo with a decision arrived at at the last meeting of the Board of Education, letters have been forwarded to the teachers of private schools, asking them to furnish evidence which may satisfy the Board that efficient and regular instruction is given at such schools. This is with a view of granting certificates of exemption to suitable private schools. AGRICULTURAL ASSOCIATION. At the meeting of the Auckland Provincial Association, a communication was received from Mr Clifton, of the Agricultural Department, stating that the Chief Veterinarian, Dairy Coinmissionei, and Biologist would endeavor to comply with the request of the Association for lectures during the coming winter. A sub-committee was appointed to make arrangements. It was announced that the annual conference of Agricultural Associations would be held this year at Dunedin, and the President and Secretary were appointed delegates to represent the Auckland Association. ATHLETIC COMPETITIONS.

A well-attended meeting of students was held at the University College for the purpose of appointing bodies to control the athletie and tennis competitions of next inter-university tournament, which is to be held next year in Auckland. It was decided to form an Amateur Athletic Club, officers being selected. It was also decided to form a tennis club. The President and Vice-presidents of the Students’ Association wore appointed to consider the question of securing lawns for the usq of students.
