Within the last few years —less thau t en —there has grown up a system known as probation for first offenders. It takes the offender at the very threshold of a criminal life, an \ instead of imposing a sentence of iiupiisonmenc upon him, commits him to ths custody of a probation officer in whose care it permits him to remain at large. The lifference in the effect upon the future life and character of the persons who come under the operation of the Probation Act is beyond estimation. . It is the difference between loss of self-respect and increase of selfrespect. In the one case the State is pushing the man further down the road of crime; in the other, it is helpiug him up and away from that highway.
