(Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, last night. Mr Berkley, solicitor, returned from Fiji by the Taviuni. He goes to England by the next mail boat to appeal to the Privy Council, the appeals referring to the Fiji deportation cases. The Fiji Attorney-General is now on his way to London by the Moana. Mb Berkley is also interesting himself in the case of two Fijians who were tied to a post and flogged for assaulting two girls on the decision of a native Magistrate. Mr Berkley contends they were entitled to be tried by the European Court. MASTERTON, last night. Tiie Farmers’ Union report on the most effective means of dealing with the small bird nuisance is systematic poisoning, and the Agricultural Department is to be urged to mix the necessary poison and supply farmers. CARTERTON, last night. Two lads named Charles Harbott and Charles Smith have been arrested on suspicion of being connected with in- • cendiary fires. They were remanded and admitted to bail. HAWERA, last night, Mr C. E. Major, who has occupied the position of Mayor for many years, at the Council Meeting last night announced that lie did not intend to seek re-election, The Council unanimously voted him"a bonus of £SO, Councillors speaking eulogistically of the good Work done for the town , by Mr Major. Mr Major announced that lie would distribute the vote among local institutions, WELLINGTON, last night. The Victorian Labour Commission commenced its sitting here to-day. Mr Tregear, secretary to the Labour Department, was under examination all the morning as to the worn of the Department. He was opposed to the abolition of Conciliation Boards, and the only, material alteration of the system iie would suggest would be that Magistrates should deal with minor cases as to breaches of an award, The Representation Commissioners meet in Wellington before .the end of this month. Mr Justice Edwards granted a decree nisi in the divorce case, Sophia Harris v. .Walter Harris^ CHRISTCHURCH, last night. Opportunity was taken at a social gathering in .the Durham street Wesleyan Church to bid farewell to the Rev Dr. Motley, whose first connection with the church dates hack 26 years. Several eulogistic speeches were made. Dr. Morley leaves on Friday for Melbourne to take up the acting managing treasurership of the Supernumerary Ministers’ and Widows’ Fund.
TiMARU, last night. Mr F. LeCren, late manager at Timaru for the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company lor 27 years, died at midnight, alter a lung. illness, aged (>7. last night. Yesterday afternoon a young man named John Gough entered a clump of busli at the back of a house fronting on Elgin ton road, . Mornington, when he was confronted by the sight of a dead man swinging from the bough of a tree. A constable was sent tor and he cut down the body and caused it to be conveyed to Mornington Hotel, where it awaits identification. When found the man had evidently been dead about 24 hours. The remains have not so far been identified. The body is that of a man of perhaps 36 years of age, about 5 feet 11 inches in height and stoutly built. The City Council to-day accepted the tender of a Belgian firm for the supply of 1618 tons tram rails at considerably below both English and American prices.
MASTERTON, last night Henry Bentley, an old Wairarapa colonist, died to-day, aged 84.
