ADMITTED TO PROBATION.
Bernard Anderson was brought up for sentence on a charge of housebreaking. Mr Lysnar appeared for the accused, and asked that tho provisions of tho First Offenders Act be extended to him. He could give no local evidence as to the character of tho accused, as the only man who could speak for him had left the colony'. Warder Nicholson, of Napier gaol, stated that he know nothing against accused. He had worked willingly at the ordinary' duties set before him during his six months’ imprisonment. His Honor read the Probation Officer’s report, in which it was stated that he had spoilt JOIO in twelve hours, principally in drink. His Honor remarked as to the sad state of affairs that drink was underneath the matter. However, accused had stated his willingness to repay the balance of the money within a reasonable time, which he set down at two months. His Honor said it was a very sad thing to see a young man like the prisoner with a good character apparently to have so far forgotten himself as to steal money, as it seemed, for the purpose of drink, which made it worse. His Honor ordered the return of the money which had not been recovered, within two months, namely, JIIO, and admitted accused to six months’ probation, giving the customary advice if accused misconducted himself.
