when, owing to difficulties arising, I was compelled to compound with my creditors, all of whom (with one or two exceptions) accepted the composition. In January, 1899, I again started in business in the Caledonian Hotel, Napier, friends guaranteeing mo to the extent of LBOOO without security. I also gave Messrs Neal and Close a security over the stock and furniture to the extent of £oOO. The hotel was,* however, in a very dilapidated condition, and in order to reinstate and re-furnish it I had to expend considerable sums of money. For many months I paid my way, but trade dropping, I was ultimately compelled to leave the business. It was whilst in this business that I contracted my present debts. I then came to Gisborne, and have since been working at bushfalling and as road overseer on Government works, only earning sufficient to keep myself and family. I was then engaged by Mr W. D. Lysnar upon his dairy farm, and I am now in his employ. The immediate cause of my filing is due to one of my creditors causing me to be arrested upon a judgment summons. I have no offer to make.”
