TAVIUNI IN A GALE.

By Telegraph—Press Association Auckland, last night. The steamer Taviuni, which arrived from Suva last night, fell in with the gale which has been raging here for the past two or three days, and, in fact, throughout the whole of the voyage tempestuous weather was encountered. During the hurricane on Sunday, some cases of oranges which were stowed on deck were soaked through by the mountainous waves which washed the decks. Throughout the three days the hurricane lasted, the seas were continually coming down the companion and doing much damage to the cabin carpets, besides breaking crockery and damaging other perishable goods. When the hurricane was at its fiercest on Monday, the Taviuni was unable to continue on her course, and was compelled to run before the wind. Towards noon yesterday, the weather moderated.
