(Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, Saturday. Mr Fowlds has' wired to tlie Premier stating that Auckland shooting men are highly indignant that- they have no representative in the Bisley team. Tlie Premier replied stating that the selection had been made by tlie Executive of tlie Rifle Association, and lie could not interfere.
The Educational Institute has appointed a Committee to devise a workable scheme of appointment for the promotion of teachers' It was decided to urge tlie Minister of Education if extra capitation is voted that it be devoted to increasing tlie salaries of country teachers. Tlie mining market shows a slight improvement. The May Queen Extended having got on gold, shares have advanced from nothing to eightpence within a week. The return from the Waitara mine is CO tons for £270 ; from Bullion claim, 30 pounds of picked stone yielded £136. The police discovered in tlie alleged gaming house a hazard table padded to deaden the sound.. The defence was that the accused were all members of Tatlersall’s club, , The Trades Conference lias resolved to unanimously urge tlie Government ■.to nationalise its mineral wealth, and the carrying trade of the colony ; to amend the Representation Act by the abolition of rural proportion in allotting suburban districts ; to give preference of employment in the State service to unionists, and to compel factories to label all goods with the name and place of manufacture ; that all vacancies in the Government service be advertised ; that the age limit be abolished, and tne names submitted to ballot after examination of fitness for the position. It is not intended to prevent maimed or injured persons being employed in public service. It was resolved that uniform sets of school books be printed and published in New Zealand, by the Government, and sold at cost price. Conference resolved to request the Government to amend tlie Conciliation and Arbitration Act to make it compulsory for the Court to give its decision within thirty days of the closing of a case ; prohibiting the discharge of a unionist or nonunionist, unless' for slackness of work ; urging the Trades Council to place before the candidates for Parliament each item passed by the Conference, and to ascertain their opinions ; that the Councils through the press, declare what tlie candidate in each electorate is in favor of.
WELLINGTON, Saturday. It has been arranged that the Coronation Contingent is to be mobilised at Christchurch. Mrs Somerville having improved in health Colonel Somerville has- fallen in with the Government’s desire that he should command the team of riflemen who are to represent New Zealand at Bisley, and the Colonel and his wife will accompany the team, leaving Wellington on the 24th in the Paparoa.
Colonel Sommerville notifies that the special Fraser match rifles which the team will use at Bisley will not be
used until the men arrive in England. Meanwhile he urges those selected to practice as much as possible at 200 yards range standing, and 500 yards kneeling. The team wil be clad in similar uniform to the New Zealand Coronation Contingent. Percy Atwood, who was Connected with the yacht Ariadne, was sentenced at the Magistrate’s Court this morning to six months imprisonment for the larceny of a bicycle. Taranaki tc Ua, of Hawke’s Bay, is to have command of the Native Coro-
nation Contingent. Captain Hughes, D. 5.0., formerly of the First Contingent, has been appointed adjutant of the North Island regiment of the Tenth Contingent. CHRISTCHURCH, Saturday.
A supposed attempt to set fire to the Christchurch Working Men’s Club was discovered last night, a quantity of paper and other combustible material being collected under the stage, evidently with the idea of sire. At the inquest on the body of the young woman Gurdler, who died under peculiar circumstances, a verdict was returned that death was due to hemorhage of the brain. The doctor stated that she had evidently had a miscarriage.
Mr Beet-ham, S.M., gave judgment in a case concerning the liability to rating of the Gas Company’s pipes and mains. He stated that as all the companies in the colony were stated to be concerned in the result, it would be best to de-cide-the matter in the Supreme Court and accordingly he gave judgment in favor of the assessment, so that the decision could bo appealed against.
