BURGLARY AT AWANUI.

A daring robbery took place at Awanui on Thursday evening, when the store of Mr George Kirk, next the Rose Hotel, was broken into and the safe removed, the contents of which, amounting to over £QO being stolen. The thieves broke open a side , door, which was fastened by a padlock, and effected an entrance, and carried away the safe a distance of 200 yards along the beach, where they prized it open with a crowbar and secured the contents. The robbery was discovered early in the morning, and immediately reported to' Constable Kelly, who is making investigations. It is said that most of the money was in notes, gold, and silver, with a few cheques, so Mr Kirk’s lo3s is bound to be considerable. He also had the misfortune to lose his books.

About a fortnight ago the bar of the Sea View Hotel was broken into, the thieves effecting an entrance by way of the front window, tbe latch of which was forced back. Upon that occasion a cheque for jgl and a bag of small silver was removed from the till, and several bottles of whisky stolen from the shelves. Up to a late hour last evening no arrests had been made, although the police were following up a clue.
