A British patrol surprised thirty of Bezindenkout's commando at Lilliekloof, Cape Colony. Piet DeWef, at Kroonstad, denounced the foreign slanders on Groat Britain, declaring Tommy Atkins invariably to be friendly, generous, and kind-hearted. Wesse’s, the peace delegate, interviewed, said he thought that negotiations would result in an honorable and satisfactory if not an ideal peace. He declared that Kruger would approve. DeWet and Steyn have returned to Parys. Hitherto efforts to open negotiations have proved unsuccessful. The Daily Mail stated that Do la Rey, as the result of the drive, lost nine killed and four wounded. One hundred and fifty-eight were taken prisoners, and eighty surrendered.

Dr Leyds, addressing the Boer Independence Committee in Paris, said the position was never more favorable. There was every prospect of England abandoning the conflict. The present negotiations were tho outcome of Lord Kitchener’s express invitation. The prisoners taken in the Orange Colony include Field-Cornet Vanschsor, of Bethlehem.
