NEW ZEALAND SYSTEM COM

MENDED. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright Sydney, March 27. At the Dairy Farmers’ Conference Mr O’Callaghan, Government Dairy Export, read a paper dealing with Government supervision of dairy produce exports. After reviewing European and Canadian systems, he said that if we took the methods adopted by the New Zealand Government towards developing and controlling the dairying industry we would find a better basis of comparison of what might be done in New South Wales. New Zealand evidently framed the Act with the view of governing the industry from the manufacturers, while from a health point of view they can take it for granted their severe system of grading has in no way interfered with the development of the industry. Otherwise he had not seen such a wonderful increase of oxports. On tho other hand what reports we bad received from the British merchants had all been in favor of the New Zealand system. There is no doubt whatever that the New Zealand system of inspection and grading brought about a marked and considerable improvement in the quality of their dairy produce. He believed that if New South Wales had a similar system much good would result. As a proof that t-he New South Wales dairying industry was developing Very’ rapidly, he stated that 41,479,000 "pounds of butter had been manufactured in the year ending March, 1891, as against 33,033,000 pounds for the previous year. He did not think there had been that improvement in the quality of New South Wales produce which was desirable,
