CARVING FORK FOUND IN CHARRED REMAINS.

(By Telegraph—Press Association.)) Dunedin, Thursday. The fire at Allanton is likely to lead to serious developments. In the body of the woman Sinnett was found a carving fork, which penetrated her heart. The police have arrested Hugh Sweeney, who had been living with deceased for years. Both parties were about fifty years of age. Sweeney was brought before the Court this morning charged with murder, and remanded for eight days. A formal inquest will be held.

THE FINDING OF THE BODY

[By Telegraph—Press Association.] Dunedin, last night. Very few particulars are available regarding the alleged murder at Allanton. The victim, Mrs Sinott, was 50 years of ago. She was a widow who had an income of her own. Sweeney, a laborer and groom, was living with her for some time, but lately ho was living in a place of his own. On Tuesday he was at the house of Mrs Sinott with another man and sorno drinking had taken place. After the fire on Wednesday night when Constable Varmody found the woman’s charred remains the chest was found exposed and a carving fork was sticking in the body somewhere in the region of the heart. Sweeney, when questioned, said ho had not been near the house on Wednesday, but there ate witnesses who saw him about.

The iuquest was opened to-day, but only formal evidence of identification was taken, and the inquest was adjourned till after the post mortem. Sweenoy is a single man, and has been a resident in the district for some years, usually working as laborer or groom.
