MELBOURNE, March 27
Major Lenihan, who commanded the Bush Veit, Carbineers, to which the Australian officers shot belonged, has supplied Mr Barton with particulars. The brother of one of the officers concerned, states that a party off Bush Veit Carbineers, under Captain Hunt, attacked a farm house, and after some, fighting retired, leaving Hunt on the ground wounded. When they returned with reinforcements, Hunt’s body was found stripped and mutilated. A Boer was caught wearing Hunt’s clothes'. He was tried by., drumhead courtmartial and shot. Subsequently six other Boers were caught wearing khaki, and were courtmartialled and shot.
Fdom information supplied from other sources, ’it is understood that the officers shot were lieutenant H. LI. Morant, a South Australian, and Lieutenant P. J. Plancock, who is supposed to hail from Westralia, while Lieutenant G, R, Wilton, of Victoria,, was sentenced to penal servitude for life, taken to Capetown in irons, and sent to England. A fourth officer was punished in some way unknown.
