AUCKLAND, last night. Obituary Mr A. M. Edwards, organising secretary to "the Liberal and Labor Federation.
The Chamber of Commerce has resolved to ask the Union Company for its reasons for stopping the daily mail between New Plymouth and Onehunga find reverting to a four days’ week .service at the end of March. The service started in December last is stated to have proved unprofitable. It was stated at the Chamber of Commerce meeting that over fifty applicants for telephones had been unable to get connected with the exchange for months past. Applications were declined because no telephone wires were available.
Representatives of the Auckland University College at the first inter-col-lege tournament of the University of New Zealand athletic, tennis, and debating contests left for Christchurch to-day. The Ninth Contingent fund receipts are £353, and there is in hand £64 14s The committee resolved to open a fund including this surplus, for the erection of a memorial to the New Zealand troopers who have fallen in the war.
WELLINGTON, last night.
At a meeting of the Amalgamated Society of Cooks and Waiters last night dissatisfaction was strongly expressed with the award of the. Arbitration Court in regard to this calling A resolution was passed expressing regret that the Court had reduced .the wages of members in an already underpaid trade, and protesting against the refusal to give half a day off in seven for recreation and rest.
The report of the directors of the Manawatu Railway Company shows the gross earnings for the year ended 2Sth February to be £104,207, being nearly £7005 greater than last year. The directors recommended a dividend of three per cent for the half year, making with the interim dividend paid in October six per cent for the year. NELSON, last night. against Lie reduction of school committees allowances, a notice of motion was tabled at yesterday’s meeting of the Education Board to ask the Government to increase the capitation to twelve shillings.
DUNEDIN, last night. The remanded charges against James and Archibald Walker for stealing paint belonging to the Union S.S. Company were proceeded with at the Police Court yesterday. After evidence was given, accused had nothing to say in answer to the customary caution. Mr Hanlon intimated that both reserved their defence. They were committed for trial, bail being allowed in the same sum as before. The other case stands over until Thursday.
