Campbell-Bannerman’s leadership of the Liberal party agreed with Lord Rosebery’s Chesterfield speech on the basis of agreement over South Africa. He would he prepared to stand or fall on Home Rule. IRISH LAND BILL In the House of Commons the Irish Land Bill was introduced by Mr Wyndham, and read a first time. It created a favorable impression. It provides for the setting aside of three million pounds for non-compulsory purchase of estates, payment to lie made in gold, Government- re-selling the land to the tenants if three-fifths are willing to buy. _
CORONATION TROOPS. Lord Wolseley commands the troops larticipating in the Coronation.
MR RHODES. Mr Cecil Rhodes’ heart is daily becoming perceptibly weaker. He had a severe heart attack last night. The patient is weaker than ever, and has greater difficulty in rallying. AFFAIRS IN CHINA. A Chinese Imperial edict announces that owing to the rebellion against the collection of the indemnity in Southern Ilouan, and the murder of fourteen Christian converts, the magistrate at Piyang lias been degraded. Another at Tungpo will be punished. Rebels caught with arms'in their possession are ordered to be beheaded. A BYE-ELECTION.
By the election at Wakefield consequent on Viscount, Milton (heir to the recently-deceased Earl Fitzwilliam tak. ing a seat in the House of Lords), Mr
Brotherton, a Conservative, has been elected. He secured a majority of 981. A brisk correspondence is proceeding in the newspapers over the Spionkop incident.
