Tho Boers replied heavily, whilo charging with splendid courage. Their wings tried to encloso the rearguard. The Diamond Fields Horse and Scouts helped to check tho charge until tho Boers, heedless of the hot fire, made a desperate rush, fairly stamping out the mounted men, who fled in blind panic. The unprotected artillery fired coolly aud steadily until all were shot. Meanwhile the infantry aud a section of the Fourth Battery kept the Boors attacking the right flank at a distance of 600 yards.

The Boers finally dismounted, and lav down. J

Methuen, failing to collect tho mountod men, gallopod hack to tho guns, encouraging the gunners with voice and gesture. He was a conspicuous target for tho concentrated Boer fire. His horse was hit in threo places. Ono by one the gunners fell, until, when Commaudant Colliers shelled the kraal, surrender was inevitable.
