Allegations of “ stiff ” running have been all too frequent in Australian papers of late, and stewards are evidently rather lax in their duties. The latest is from The Referee, and is as follows “ The stewards at Warwick Farm were in much to.o lenient a mood on Saturday, and more than one owner had reason to he thankfu, that Mr Daly was not present, That gentleman would have been so disgusted at seeing his handicaps spoilt by the presence of non-triers in every race that it would have been strange indeed if he had not stirred his fellow-stew-ards into decided action. Owners, now that racing is- sucli a business, can scarcely be expected to try every time —but they might atleast instruct their jockeys to make a reasonable pretence of doing so-. As it was, some of the horses were handled in a manner thatleft no doubt as to their not being properly labelled.”- In connection with the above it is worthy of note that the Australian Jockey Club is being petitioned to appoint stipendiary stewards- 'with a view of grappling with this increasing evil. That such a step should be taken there can be pq shadow of doubt ; and the same remarl: applies in equal measure to New Zealand. At the Racing Conference, the question was discussed, but deemed impracticable. It is a pity that so very important a matter was not given more consideration, for if it is considered desirable to appoint .stipendiary stewards the matter could be easily arranged. As the Americans have it, “ He can who thinks he can,” or as we know the saying, “Where’s tjieie’s a will there’s a way.”-
