By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright SYDNEY, Mar. 16. A deputation of the Chamber ot Commerce waited on Mr Barton to ask consideration of Australian trade ■in the New Hebrides. The deputation referred to the dangerous competition of the French in New Caledonia, and pressed the appointment of a British Resident. It further asked for better facilities for the employment of native labor, Mr Barton, in reply, said that he expected a Resident would he appointed immediately. lie did not favor a Customs agreement with the New Hebrides, but was anxious for the increase of British influence by legitimate means.
