WAIHUKA y. county

The long-looked-for match between Lli< above teams came oil' in Mr Caesar.s paddock on Saturday, when l.hc pleasant meeting anticipated was somewhat spoilt through a mhuinderlanding as to tlie time of commencing play. Tlie V.'aiiiuka captain, Mr C' M. Hutchinson, liad arranged with Mr Caesar for an all-day match to .omnienee at. 11. and all his men were or, tlie ground at that hour, some having had to get up at 1 and 3 a.in. so

as to keep their appointment. On arrival at Ormond 1 hey found, to their chagrin, that the County men had been warned '"or two, because Mr Caesar

bought the visitors could not get own earlier. They therefore had to i'l tiie inter veiling hours with some iractice among themselves, and an adoeminent to Mr Keenan’s for dinner.

Tlie match commenced by Waihuka going first to tlie wickets, but they all seemed so done lip and spiritless they could make no stand against Crawford and R. Barton, who bowled better than usual, and were all sent back for 33, towards which Burch, B. Sharp, Kruse, and !•;. Leggett contributed 7 each by steady play. The captain put himself in last, or he would have been difficult to get out bad he gone in earlier, for in the 2nd innings, when Waihuka scored 28 for 3 wickets, lie was run out alter an excellent, innings for 12. 0. Leggett was unfortunately given out when caught off his necktie. Waihuka did uncommonly well to dispose of the

strong County team for 87, of which Crawford, Kere, and Smith scored more than half, and a promising colt in J. Leggett played an excellent inning£ for •I. Burch and Kruse howled well, the former especially when he heat .J. Barton and Raymond with “ trimmers.” Taylor had hard luck both in hatting and bowling. McCredic -showed his usual smartness behind the wickets. A novelty for Ormond in the form oF the Italian band added to the enjoyment of a large number of spectators on the ground, and. a long programme was well carried out iiv the performers. A sumptuous and toothsome tea presided over by Mesclames Caesar and Ormerod, assisted by Misses Bruce, Gordon, Ingletoii, McGrath, and some gentlemen was done full justice to not only by the players hut by a number of visitors from Gisborne and suburbs. Mr j. Partridge, of Waimala, kindly officiated as scorer. The day’s proceedings closed with each team heartily cheering the other and Mrs Caesar and the ladies for their hospitality. Subjoined aie the scores : WAIHUKA.
