INTERESTING ADDRESS

! “ THE HELPING HAND TO LABOR.” 1 [By Telegraph—Press Association.] Nelson, last night. At tho annual meeting of the Chamber of Commerce the retiring President, Mr C. T. Fell, delivered an interesting address. He said that the fall in the prices of their staple products meant a severe loss to the colony, which must be felt, and ho attributed the greater activity that now generally prevails, as being the result of a feeling that all must rise to the occasion, and meet the difficulty. In that view he spoke hopefully of the future. Ho referred to the labour question, and said he felt the helping hand to labor bad reached, or nearly reached, its extreme limit, and said that if the workers were well advised they would see that they did not strain the bond between labor and capital to the breaking point, for they were in competition with people who worked longer hours, and who were temperate. He urged that workers and employers must work hand in hand. He spoke with satisfaction of tho attitude taken up by the colony in helping to bear the burdens of the Old Country, but reminded his hearers of tho new responsibilities involved.

Mr S. Kirkpatrick was elected chairman for the ensuing year, and Mr Bannehr vice-chairman.

A motion in favor of tho metric system was adopted unanimously.
