A FIRE.
CAMBRIDGE, Monday. A deliberate attempt was made last evening to burn down the Presbyterian Manse here, a quantity oE bagging and combustible material being placed upon the mat at the front door on the verandah and ignited. The Rev. Erwin and his wife are away for a month’s holiday, and are expected tc return this week. During their absence the house was locked up. Fortunately a neighbor living about 30J yards away noticed the flames, obtained assistance, and extinguished the fire. Another five minutes and the building must have gone. The fire took place at 7.30 p.m., when nearly everyone was in church. It was clearly the act of an incendiary, as the material was put just where the wind caught it, and on the side of the house where it was very likely to be viewed. The pastor was only lately married, and the destruction of the manse and contents would have been a serious loss. The police are trying to unravel the mystery, dome think it might have been caused by children, but the time and method adopted prove it was not so.
