A cotumuuicalion was received from the Auckland Committee appointed to make fitting recognition of the patriotic services of the Premier prior !o his departure for England. Several lists for subscriptions were also forwarded.—Cr Tombleson : Wo are giving the Premier a trip Home to the Coronation and pa\ ing his expenses. What more does he want '! —Cr Jex-Blake: He appears to be anticipating a good outing.—The Chairman : This matter has been well advertised. The lists can be left hero for subscriptions. ( The Council has nothing to give.— Cr f Mossman : It is begging for money again 1 —I wonder if the Premier is aware of ‘ this being done.—Tito Chairman : Of course he is. Cr Mossman : Then I think that he ought to bo well ashamed of himself. It was decided that the lists should be left in the outer office for subscriptions. OH.UO.MJ ROAD HOARD. The Ormond Iload Board wrote for warding the sum of £OO, part payment of a contract which the Council had in hand for that body. The balance would be forwarded on completion of the work. Received. government scusiov. The Land and Income Department wrote forwarding voucher for paymentof J 61787 12s 2d, on account of subsidy due for 1001-1002. . GRAZING-ItUN LEASES. The Secretary to t-iio Treasury wrote stating that rates from grazing runs, iho leases of which are for 21 years, could not be accepted as security for a loan under the Government Loans to Local Bodies Act. In the case of a loan applied for by the Council, the security was considered insufficient. WAIMATA NORTH. Messrs Todd Bros., of Waimata, wrote with regard to the state of culverts in tho district. They were prepared to put in four culverts free of cost, ii' Council found the timber. The Chairman stated that tho road was not a county road. It was decided to supply the material asked for. TAWIIKTK ROAD. At the request of Mr H. E. Tifi'en, it was decided to form and metal part of the Waipaoa road. The Engineer was also instructed to report on a river crossing in the district, and repair the same if tho cost was not too great. DOG TAX. Mr H. Currie wrote asking for a rebate on the amount of his tender for the dog tax in the County. When ho made his tender he was of opinion that the Natives could not register their own dogs. On this account lie was JG2S out in his tender. Tho application was declined. GISBORNE WAliiOA ROAD. In response to an application from tho Tiuiroto Banners’ Union, it was decided to put extra maintenance men on the Gis-borne-Wairoa road, so that tho road would bo in a good state of repair beforo the winter set in. hanger’s retort. Tho County Hanger reported that 70 head of cattle and 112 head of sheep had been impounded during the month.
ROAD THROUGH I’UHATIKOTIKO NO. 7. Mr W. Hutchinson waited upon tho Council in regard to a road through the above biock. Tho Council had proposed to take sufficient land for tho road. Mr Hutchinson said that there would bo no difficulty in coming to terms with tho Council. Cr Graham did not think the Council could do anythikg at present. The question of taking tho land could stand ovor, and in tho meantime Mr Hutchinson would allow traffic through his property. Mr Hutchinson asked the Council to take precautions against the gates being left opon. Tho Chairman stated that a number of native owners were interested in the road. One native was present at the meeting, but stated that he had sold his interest. It was decided to ask Mr llutchiDson to put his offer to allow traffic through his property in writing. Several matters affecting river crossings and drains in the vicinity of Mr Hutchinson’s property wore also discussed, and a satisfactory settlement arrived at. engineer’s report. Tho County Engineer furnished tho following report:—“ Contract 10, metalling Wairoa road : This contract has been satisfactorily completed, the hill now being metalled as far as Mr Matthews’ house. Formation Ilangaroa - Tiniroto road: A good job has been made of this contract. Tho bridlo track, lately cleared and preceding this work, has, however, slipped considerably. Formation at Fatutabi: This work is reported finished, but has not yet been inspected. The cartage of metal into depots has in most eases been pushed on ; some few of the contractors are, however, behindhand. The metal for depots on Wairoa road has been put direct on the road. Mot-ailing, Waimata : The contractor is still . engaged quarrying and breaking stone in readiness for carting. Deepening drains, Ormond Domain, etc.: The road portion on my last visit had been completed, and the work of deepening the larger drains is now being proceeded with. Metalling near Lysnar’s creamory : The requisite amount of stono has been obtained, and some 200 yards broken ready for spreading. Metal repairs, Lavcnham road: Tho contractors having pushed ahead with this work, 504 yards of river shingle have been spread. Metalling Puatac Hill: On my last inspection a start had been made, and two or threo chains completed. lam also having about 11 chains metalled at the foot of the hill near the gatoway. On tho Waimata road stone is being broken for repairs to llichardson’s Hill, and repairs aro also being effected near Mr Dellerby’s and tho store, etc. With regard to tho proposed loan works at Hunui, I have inspected the line of road to bo formed, and the work of laying off the sections can be proceeded with after I have seen Mr Kenway on the matter. Tho road machine is engaged on the inland Waiapu road, and the man in charge reports good work, some four miles having already been reformed and trimmed up. As regards tho largo drain on Delautour corner, I
would point out that nothing has yet been done by the Boad Board. After hoavy rains a pond is formed at this place, and I should advise the drain being filled in without further delay. I append herewith a list of some of the principal drains that require attention." The report was adopted. PATUTAUI QUARRY. Mr J. Burnett, of the I'atutuhi Quarry, wrote stating that the Borough Council Overseer had made arranguients to take the balance of the Borough Council’s stone. Cr Mosstuan asked if the Borough Council was likely to leave any of the big metal on the Council’s hands when they did not want it. Cr King said the Borough Council had taken out the metal and stacked it. The Chairman said the quarryman should he instructed to see that the stone was taken away. It was decided to ask the Borough Council to remove the spawls before obtaining smaller metal. NOTICE OF MOTION. Cr Graham gave notice of the following motion :—“ That the Council consider the advisibility of dividing the County of Cook into two.” Cr King said that lie considered the present proportions of the county too cumbersome. With two counties the district would receive a much larger amount in the way of subsidy from the Government. SUPPLY OF GRAVEL. Mr C. E. Armstrong, Public Works Office, Gisborne, replying to the Council re supply of gravel, stated that he had received no instructions to supply gravel from the railway pit. He had already suggested to the Department that the railway might carry gravel in connection with the proposed conveyance of goods. The Council’s letter had been forwarded to the District Engineer, Auckland.
A conference of local bodies bad been arranged for tbo afternoon to consider the question. At the appointed time, His Worship tho Mayor, representing the Borough, was the only one to attend. Mr Townley said that it was the end of the financial year with the borough, and they were not at present in a position to make any financial proposal, but the County Council could depend upon them giving every assistance to further the request to the Government for the use of the railway, It was decided to await the reply from the Government,
