FIFTH test match,
AUSTRALIANS DISMISSED FOR M FAIR STAND BY ENGLISHMEN. By Telegraph —Pre3B Association— Copyrigh Melbourne, Feb. 28. The last test match of the English tout was commenced to-day. The fact of the Australians having won the rubber robbed the game of a good deal of the enthusiasm that marked the early struggles, btill a large amount of interest was manifested in tho contest, chiefly because upon the result depends the choice of the balance of the Australian team for the visit to England. Tho injury to Saunders’ arm rendered his inclusion impossible. Travers took his place, and Howell made way for Fade, otherwise the team was the same as played in the fourth test. The English team was the same as that in the last test match. Maclaren’s luck in (hi spin of tho coin deserted him, and Truinble winning the toss decided to bat. The weather was fine and pleasant, but the
wicket was soft. Trumper and Duff were the first to bat, Jessop opposing the attack. Truinper got the first ball away for three, and the next two yielded Duff two and four. He added another fourer, and then, in trying to pull Braund, hit his wicket. On the advent of Hill Blythe relieved Jessop, and the ncw-coiner opened carefully. Trumper playing confidently, quickly reached the twenties, including several nice drives to the fence, and carried his total to twenty-soven. Facing Blythe he returned one and was clean bowled. Two for fifty-four. Gregory then partnered Hill. He opened with a couple oil Braund, and then drove the same bowler to the fence. When 66 Hayward took the ball from Braund, his first delivery resulting in four byes. Hill now got to work, and play became more lively. Another change of bowling was made. Gunn relieving Blythe brought a separation. He was cut by Hill to Jones, third man. Hill’s innings was characterised by vigorous hitting, and included three fourers. Noblo and Gregory kept things moving till luncheon, the score at the adjournment being three wickets for 98. On resuming play, disasters came fast.
Gregory tipped Gunn’s second delivery to Jones in the slips, and tho batsman retired for 25, made in good stylo. Trumble filled the vacancy. Noblo cut Gunn to the boundary, but, facing Hayward, was given out leg-before, the filth wicket thus falling for 104. Armstrong went in nest, only to see Trumble sky Hayward to Quaife. Hopkins’ contribution was a fence drive off Hayward. Kelly failed to score. Eady made a fourer, added a single, and was clean bowled. Travers, the last man, played briskly, and helped Armstrong, who played a careful game, to bring the total to 144, before he tipped Gunn to Braund’s hands in the slips.
