PRICE OF BREAD.
(To the Editor of the Times.)
Sir, —I notice per advertisement that the bakers are raising the price of bread one half penny for tho 21b loaf, using the old cry “ rise of flour.” Now, Sir, they (tho bakers) are very dilatory in letting the public know when the price of flour is lowered, and usually pressure has to be applied to bring the cost of the loaf down' again. Sevenpence( for a four pound loaf is beyond all reason even at tho present price of flour. What I would suggest is this : Let the consumers bo up and doing. Some fifteen years back the same thing occurred, the bakers combining and thinking they had things in their own hands, but a meeting of householders was held at the Royal Hotel for the purpose of starting a co-operative bakery, which caused the monopolists to draw in their horns and immediately reduce the price. There is nothing to prevent the same thing being done now if someone takes the thing in hand. I think there is still an oven in Gisborne disengaged, and a good baker can be imported to do the work, when good wholesome bread could bo supplied at a considerably less cost than at present, and afford a good dividend to shareholders also. I throw this out as a suggestion to any heads of families interested.—l am, etc., Pro Bono Publico. [Our correspondent must bear in mind that the Millers’ Trust has to be reckoned with.—Ed. Times. |
