information was received in Gisborne yesterday that Sergeant-Major E. Barton, who joined the Fourth Contingent at Gisborne as a trooper and sinco rose to his rank, has received an appointment as Acting-Lieutenant of the Ninth Contingent, and joins at Auckland. SergeantMajor Barton, after serving at the front, went Home, and has not long returned to the colony. Mr E. A. Pavitt, of Christchurch, has also receiued a commission as lieutenant in the same contingent, and joins the forces at Dunedin. The Star of Gisborne Lodge, No. 01, of the 1.0.0. F., of New Zealand, American Constitution, held their usual meeting last evening at the Lodge Room, Masonic Hall, Bro. Robert Robb, Noble Grand, presiding. Three new members were elected and three proposed, and one candidate was duly initiated. The anniversary picnic committeo brought up their balance-sheet, showing a substantial surplus, which was unanimously voted to the Benevolent Fund. Next Tuesday evening, at 7.00, a Degree Lodge will bo formed. All Third Degree members are asked to attend, for the purpose of forming the same and electing officers, and all members wishing to have degrees conferred on them are asked to attend at 8 o’clock.

The annual meeting of the New Zealand Central District of the Independent Order of Rechabites, Salford Unity, was held at Wellington list week. Bro. W. Stead, D.C.R., of Invercargill, presided. About twenty-five delegates were present, amongst them being Bro. A. Georgeson, Sec., P.O.R. (Gisborne Tent), and Sister I. Georgeson, P.C.R. (Star of New Zealand Tent). The reports of the district officers on the affairs of the district were submitted and approved. A lot of discussion took place in regard to juvenile tents, and it was resolved to try and elicit more active work in this branch. The balance-sheet showed the funds as totalling nearly 1)30,000, while three now tents had been established during the year —the New Century (Levin), Waingongoro (Cardiff, and Star of New Zealand (Gisborne). With regard to a district for Gisborne, it was resolved that Bro. Mayson, of the Hope of Napier Tent, visit Gisborne tents at a convenient date. The next meeting takes place at Christchurch in February of next year. Bro. and Sister Georgeson arc expected to return to Gisborne on Saturday morning. A meeting of the Ballanee Tent, No. 12,1.0. R., S.U., was held in the Tent-room on Wednesday evening, Bro. J. Dods, C.R., presiding. In his written report of the District Meeting at Wellington, Bro. Georgeson referred to the discussion which had taken place in regard to the juvenile work. It was stated that all over New Zealand and in every society the juvenile branches seemed to be at a standstill, and Bro. T. Fathers, of Nelson, District Superintendent of Juvenile Branches, was instructed to visit the Tents and see what he could do in the matter. At the meeting of the Gisborne Tent Bro. E. Ebeling, Deputy Ruler, presided. In his report Bro. Georgeson stated that Bro. Maysou, of Napier, had been appointed by the District to visit the local Tents ; 110 had asked the District Officers in regard to keeping a member serving in South Africa good on the books, and had received a satisfactory reply. Bro. Georgeson referred to the enthusiasm amongst the members, but thought that the Gisborne Tent could teach tho other Tents a lot in many respects. Tho repoit was adopted. A meeting of the Star of New

Zealand Tent was held last evening, Sister O'Connor, C.R., presiding. A letter was received from Bro. A. Georgeson, in reference to the matters of Juvenile Tents Nos. 2 and 3, which had collapsed, tho Tent having instructed their representative to bring the matter before the District meeting, with the view of getting the names of the officers of the Jato Tents and getting them re-established. Sister Georgeson had brought tho matter up, and in reply the Secretary, Bro. Bennett, said, “ Now, there is an energetic new branch for you, only formed six months ago, yet they have an eye to progress. They noticed they were No. 6, although thero are onlyfour Tents on the list. I will find out the names of the qther two, Sister Georgeson, and may you be successful in getting them re-established.” (Hear, hear, from all sides). The members of the Tent expressed themselves as greatly pleased at the success of their representative.
