INTERNATIONAL TRADE.
A WARNING TO BE CAREFUL.
[By Telegraph—Press Association.] Auckland, last night,
At a meeting of the Council of the Chamber of Commerce a letter sent by Mr li. Kronfeld to the Premier was read. The letter stated that tho writer, who had been engaged for twelve years in business relations with the merchants in the Pacific Islands, was of opinion that dcforontial duties on articles manufactured in foreign countries, and the proposal that New Zealand coal should bo carried in British ships only, would doterminally affect our trade with the Islands, which had of late years grown considerably. This trade would with jut doubt be jeopardised if this country should take up an attitude entirely adverse to the interests of the industries of foreign nations. Mr John Bold, said this was one of the most important letters ever brought before the Council of tho Chamber of Commerce. He had always been in favor of freedom of trade, and now they had the Premier in favor of restricting the trade, and the retiring President of the Chamber with slight leaning in the same direction. Ho did not think there was the slightest chance of the Old Country going in for any policy of this kind at present. Mr Nathan intimated that ho would submit a motion on the subject to the next meeting of the Council.
