DAIRYING.

MEETING AT TE AltAI

At the meeting of farmers, called by Mr McGregor to consider the erection of a skimming station for tho Te Arai district, there was only a small attendance, but those who did attend were evidently there to do business. This was shown by the amount of support promised at the meeting—lo 7 cows being guaranteed by those present, with a prospect of a far larger number if they can bo procured, and there j are also another 120 cows in tho district which can be counted on for a certainty, making a total of 287. The farmers present wero in favor of the creamery being ereeled near the Karawa bridge, so as to meet the settlers in tho Murewai district, from which it is expected to receivo the milk of about another 100 cows at least —making a total of over 880 cows in prospect for next season.

The farmers present were confident that the Te Arai creamery would be the largest in Poverty Bay during the coming season.

Of course, the number of cows

prospect does not represent that increase to the Ilia-Ora factory, as about 70 of them get taken from the factory to supply the creamery, it being the nearest, but it is evident that the farmers of Poverty Bay havo at last grasped tho fact that there is money in tho dairy industry, more sure than in any other branch of the farming business ; those having good cows and propor feed can with care net over ±1 per cow per month for milk alone, when tho cows are in the flush of tho season —that is, taking tho value of butter fat at 7)d per lb.

If is very gratifying to find that the farmers are giving tho industry their encouragement and support, so as to enablo the proprietor to work up tho industry to a still more successful issue.
