The Governor has received advice that Trooper Win. 11. Davis, of the Seventh Contingent, died at Charlestown from wounds received on January loth. Davis came from Medbury, Canterbury. A meeting of ladies will be held in tho Roman Cotholic school-room this evening, for tho purpose of arranging for the annual St. Patrick’s social, which will he held on tho evening of the day of the sports.

After assuring its readers that the men at Te Papapa camp are the most orderly and best behaved who have ever camped in Auckland, the Auckland Star makes

this strange statement: —There can be no doubt that having a canteen on the spot is a fine thing for the orderliness of the camp and the Contingent. When men can got good beer from the canteen, they do not “ force the pace ” when in town, or bring bottles of bad whisky back with them.

The chief attraction of the present week for the sporting public will be the Pakarae Jockey Club’s annual meeting, which takes place on Thursday. A capital programme of five events, the chief being the Pakarae Cup of .£lO, has been prepared, and a good day’s outing should be obtained. O’Reilly’s coach will leave the Albion Club Hotel at 8 a.m., returning in tho evening. On the evening of the races a social will be given in the Pakarae Hall, and the funds will be devoted towards tho erection of a native meeting-house. Mr W. Mackay, of Ormond, who during tho past few weeks has been carrying on a most successful hawking business throughout the country districts, has just returned from a trip to the coast. He was one of the first persons in the district to drive a vehicle from Tolago Bay to Tokomaru. The coach which he uses in the hawking trade in itself weighs 14cwt., and is capable of taking 35cwfc., of goods. Mr Mackay left Gisborne on the 25th January, and alter remaining in Tolago Bay ten days proceeded to Tokomaru on the new Hikowai road. He had no difficulty in crossing the rivers, and the road beyond the Hikowai bridge was ill splendid order. A full stock of drapery is carried by Mr Maekay, and the van is built in such a manner as to enable the goods to be displayed. It is Mr Mackay’s and his partner’s, Mr Perry, intention to travel the whole of the district with the van.

The final contract of sale and purchase of the Gisborne Freezing works was completed on Saturday. The Committee met and fixed the freezing rates for the season current subject to revision by the permanent directors when appointed. The works will commence killing on Wednesday next. It will be seen by the scale of charges that the shareholders are to receive substantial advantages. Tho application list for shares will close on the Bth of April next, after which, under the Articles, no applications upon the present subscriptions can be received. Those who have promised or undertaken by signed agreement to take shares are from day to day completing their subscriptions. The rates fixed for freezing are : Sheep, l£d to full shareholders, and l|d to others ; pelt and fat to be credited to owners and wool tc be fellmongered on their account at Id per lb to full pjjarenolders, and 14-d per id te other owners. Beef, at 1 l-16th d to fuil shareholders, and 1 3-16th d to others.
