The Borough Council lias not got mudi satisfaction from its message addressed to the Premier, the latter having replied to the Mayor as follows :—“J_ have to thank you very much for your Limi invitation to visit’ (liubouie ou the occasion of the opening of the Gisborne-Karaka railway, and I regret exceedingly that it will be impossible for me to be present.— R. J. Seddon.”
Mr G. Matlhewson’s reappointment as a member of the Hawke’s Bay Lund Board is gazetted. Mr W. Morgan left for Napier last evening as delegate to confer with the Education Board on matters tii local interest. The Rev. Canon Webb lias been appointed to Ormondville and Makotuku, there being a vacancy in that parish owing to the death of the Rev. T. J.' Wills. Mr W. L. Rees left for Auckland on Saturday morning on Supreme Court business. Mr A, L. 1). Fraser, M.H.R., passed through Gisborne on Saturday morning on his way to Auckland to carry out his duties as' Native Land Commissioner. Mr Harley D. Evans, who was conveyed to the Hospital on Friday evening in an unconscious state through a fall from his horse, had so far recovered on Saturday, morning as to be removed home. Mr J. H. London, of Abbotsford, commercial traveller, is definitely out for Taieri. His experience as a commercial ought to qualify him for the position he now seeks. There is profit in a variety show. The purchase of the Princess Theatre and the Provincial Hotel, with half an acre of freehold, has been completed by Mr Percy Dix at Dunedin. Lieutenant Beckham Arthur, of Gisborne, joins the Ninth Contingent in South Africa with the rank of captain. He is at present in London. Mr J. Holmes, of the local post and telegraph staff, has been transferred to the Dannevirke office, and proceeded to that place yesterday. Mr Steele, of Dannevirke, comes to Gisborne. The wife of Mr C. Whitfield is lying in the hospital, suffering from a compound fracture of the leg. The injury was caused in a peculiar way, about a fortnight ago. A man was riding recklessly along the Ormond road, on the Whataupoko, and in stepping aside to avoid the horse Mrs Whitfield fell
into the deep ditch, with the unfortunate result that- she suffered verv painful injury. Mr J. J. Holland was a passenger to Auckland on Saturday morning. He returns to Gisborne in about ten days. Amongst the passengers by the Te Anau last night were Messrs’ Danvers and Piper, well-known throughout the colony as handicappcr and starter respectively. They are to be congratulated upon their work at the recent meeting. Better starting we have never teen, and the large fields and close finishes were unmistakeable testimony of the successful manner in which Mr Danvers adjusted the handicaps. Wilson-Barrett Company passed through Gisborne in the Te Anau yesterday, and open at Napier this evening. 'The great actor expressed regret at having to pass Gisborne by. Miss Alice Hollander left for Sydney on Saturday, a large number of musical people being on the wharf to bid tier farewell.
Mr Foster, representing Niven and Co., of Napier, has' been given the order ior the erection of a butter factory at Nuhaka for the Co-operative Dairy Company. Tie ‘following officers have been elected for the Golf Club for the ensuing season : —President, Mr R. J. •Reynolds; .vice-President, Mr F. T. Morgan ; committee, Messrs Faram, Grant, E J Chrisp, Darton, and Barlow.
Mr W. C. Buchanan has intimated his intention of contesting the Wairrapa seat in the Opposition interes*-
