POVERTY BAY TURF CLUB’S
meeting.
There was a large attendance at the second day’s racing of tho Poverty Lay Turf Club’s summer meeting, and the outing proved a most enjoyable one. lao course was in splendid order, the nelds wero largo, and the racing was full ot interest. The following are the results:
Stewards’ Handicap, 7 furlongs.
38 Mr R. E. Jefferson’s br g Craftsman, by Billingsgate Skylark, (j. 7, McNamara x 145 Mr J. A. Harding’s Tauhei, 9.u, lleidy " 40 Mr H. Connop’s Victoria . u'oss, 7.10, Neal 6 Also started : 204 Geologist. A good race resulted, Craftsman coming with a strong run in the last hundred yards, and just beating Tauhei by half a length, Victoria Cross being the same distance away third, and Geologist soveral lengths away last. Time, 1.294-0. There were 433 investors on the machine, and tho dividond was JEIO os. Second Handicap Hurdles, H miles. 74 Mr J. T. Blake’s Sylvanus, by Tho Dauphin— Inisthona, 11.4, Lawry 1 70 Mr F. Also started : 145 Rodara. Sylvanus and Cronje raced to the last hurdle togethor, and tho Dauphin gelding making a good jump had all tho best of his opponent in tho run to the post, winning a good race by a baro haltlength. Time 2.55 3-5, totalisator 320, div. T 3 17s.

Paria was first away, and was never headed, winning easily by two and a-half lengths. Time 1.31 1-5. Divs., £4 9s and ,£1 4s. Sunderland Stakes Handicap, 1 mile. 159 J. A. Harding’s Materoa, by Torpedo—Rivulet, 8.9, Reidy ... 1 55 F. Ross’s Red Lancer, 8.9, Buchanan 2 77 G. Adams’ The Miner, 8.4, Sceats o Also started: 151 Destroyer 8.2, 52 Minerve 7.10, 46 Craftsman 7.2. Notwithstanding Materoa’s indifferent performance at the Park the previous week, tho daughter of Torpedo had a host of followers, and when the flag fell she was favorite on the machine. Reidy got his mount away well, and, occupying a prominent position throughout, Materoa had no difficulty in shaking off a challenge on the part of Red Lancer, the popular Huia colors being borne to victory by a couple of lengths. Red Lancer and The Miner had an interesting battle for second place, tho former catching the judge’s eye by a short head. Time 1.44 2-5. Divs.. £'2 5s and £2 4s. Roseland Handicap, 6 furlongs. 55 Mr T. Carroll’s b g Pistol Grip, by Martini-Enfield, aged, 8.10, Caghlan ... 123 Mr B. Steggall’s Ahititi, aged, 8.12, Reidy ••• ••• 2 30 Mr F. Pistol Grip was in front at tho home turn, and stalling off a strong challenge on the part of Bob and Ahititi, won in good style by two lengths, Bob being beaten by Ahititi for second place by a length. Time, 1.18 1-5. There were 329 investors on the machine, and the dividends were £4 and 12s. Handicap Maiden Scurry, 5 furlongs. 108 J. A. Harding’s b f Soultina, by Soult —Helen McGregor, 3yrs, 8.0, Reidy ••• 1 59 E. Devery’s Ikatere, 8.7, Noble ... 2 15 C. J. Bennett’s Bullfinch, 7.10, Griffiths 3 Also started: 154 Tynedale, 8.13 ; 73 Kohine, 8.0 ; 18 First Start, 7.12. From a good start Bullfinch carried the field along at a merry pace, and then gave way to Soultina and Ikatere. Half-way up the straight tho Soult filly had her field beaten, and finishing gamely, won easily by two lengths. Time 1,6, totalisator 427, divs. £2 13s and £1 12s. A protest was entored by the owner- of Bullfinch against Ikatere, on the ground that the latter had run at an unregistered meeting at the Karaka, but after a short enquiry the protest was dismissed. Publicans’ Purse Handicap, 5 furlongs. 150 Mr J. Clark’s Paria, by Albert — Flirt, 6yrs, 7.4, McNamara ... 1 102 Mr H. Connop’s Victoria Cross, 6yrs, 7.13, Neale ‘2 84 Mr B. Wright’s Rosiphelo, 4yrs, 7.8, Sceats , •••, 3 Also started : 172 Geologist, McPherson ; 13 Cadeau, Cogblan. Victoria Cross led to the homo turn, when she was joinod by Rosiphele and Paria. A good finish resulted, but the Napier-owned mare could not get on terms with the Albert gelding, who won by a length and a half. Time, 1.31. Divs., JE2 6s and -£1 7s. Farewell Handicap, 7 furlongs.
